You know how important your credit report can be. Lenders, employers, insurance companies and others look at your credit report to make decisions about credit, insurance, employment opportunities, and renting or buying a home.
What can be on your credit report?
If there is inaccurate information on your credit report, you have the right to challenge credit report errors under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. If the information is accurate but negative, it can stay on your credit report 7 years for most information and 10 years for bankruptcy information. Information about a criminal conviction can stay indefinitely.
What if the credit report has inaccurate information?
You can dispute mistakes, and the credit reporting agency has an obligation to investigate and respond to you. If an error is found, the agency must fix it immediately. The three consumer reporting companies in the U.S. are Experian, Transunion and Equifax. You cannot remove a bankruptcy filing, but you can assure that the information available is accurate.
